Alfonso “Al” Madrid, known by family and friends as Al, passed away February 24, 2023, at the age of 86. Al was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming on December 14, 1936 to Joseph and Viola Madrid. Al grew up in Cheyenne where he was the youngest of six children. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Cheyenne in 1954 and shortly thereafter, struck out on his own.
Al worked various jobs and eventually worked a job where he met his lifelong friend and future brother in law Rudy Camacho. In the summer of 1963 Rudy talked Al into taking a trip with him to Mexico to meet a young woman. It was on this trip, that Al met Rafaela Sandoval. After meeting, Al and Rafaela quickly fell in love and married in November of that year. The two of them remained steadfast in marriage for 58 years until Rafaela’s passing on March 24, 2022.
With a family now in tow, Al landed a job with EG & G. He relocated to Las Vegas where he worked with the nuclear testing program as a Mechanical Technician until he retired in 1992. Al was not able to just sit at home and water the flowers after retirement, so he and Rafaela began buying and selling items they purchased from yard sales. They bought more than they sold, but they did it together. Every weekend you could see the two of them out fighting the crowds, trying to find the best bargains they could. If there are yard sales in heaven, that is where you will find Al and Rafaela.
Al is survived by his daughters Brenda (Mark), and Sandra (Ronald), four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Rafaela, sister Isabel and brothers Louis and Fred.
A memorial service for Alfonso will be held at 11 am on April 15th at Growing In Grace Church of Las Vegas. The church is located at 6920 Edna Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89117.
