Barnum Leavitt

b. August 13, 1914

Barnum was born in Mesquite, NV.  He was the 9th child of 15.  His parents were Christopher Lister and Annie Maria Barnum Leavitt.  He graduated from Virgin Valley High School.  Barney married Bernice Reber from Littlefield, Arizona on May 22, 1937.  They worked in Mesquite until 1940 and then moved to Las Vegas. He was a life long resident.  His marriage to Bernice was soleminized in the St. George Temple, April 9, 1956.  He was a truck driver for many years with Las Vegas Building Materials and worked at the Las Vegas City Animal Shelter.  He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints.

Barnum is survived by his four children, Patricia Louise(John)Schoppman of Cold Creek, Mary Ellis(Sue)Leavitt of Temecula, California,Dorothy Ann(Ron) Bettencourt of Santa Maria, California and Russel Barnum(Jean)Leavitt of Mesa, Arizona.  10 Grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren;sister Ila Gustin of Las Vegas; and brothers, Gene R. Leavitt of Salt Lake City.

He was preceded in death by his father; mother; seven brothers; Lister, Glen, Jake, Ross, Evan, Jack Theron; and sisters, Annie Donetta Potter, Lucinda Nelson, Nell Granger and Stella Pingel;his wife of 61 years; and great-granddaughter, Natalie Marie Wilbanks.

He traveled extensively with his wife and sons.  They went to England, Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, Canada and the U.S.

His family would like to thank those at the Kolob Rehabilitation & Care Center and Odyssey Hospice, who were so kind and treated him with dignity.
