Bennett Spencer

Bennett Spencer was born August 3, 1948 to the late Lon D Spencer Sr. and Helen Smith Spencer in Mount Pleasant, NY. He was the fifth of six children born to this union. He accepted Christ at a young age and attended Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio.
Bennett graduated from Glenville High School, Cleveland, OH in 1966, where he was voted the most-friendliest male in the graduating class. He attended the Art and Graphics Institute in Cleveland. He was the first Black Graphic Artist in the State of Ohio to draw advertisements on the billboard signs. Bennett received an award by the May Company Department Store to show case his art work in front of the window displays.
He also worked side by side as a plumber in his father’s plumbing business in Cleveland.  In 1967, Bennett enlisted in the United States Air Force and was assigned to the Civil Engineering Squadron.  Bennett was joined in holy matrimony to Elaine Forrest on May 4, 1968 and to this union they became the proud parents of two daughters, Stephanie and Monica. While serving in the military, he attended Wichita State University, in Wichita, Kansas.  Bennett achieved the rank of Staff Sargent.  He was Honorably discharged from the military in 1981.  Bennett was a 33rd degree Mason and a Shriner.  Bennett trained in the martial arts and participated in Taekwondo and Judo tournaments.  He was a prolific artist drawing free hand. He enjoyed music and taught himself the flute.
His most recent employments were as a maintenance worker at Buffalo Bills Casino at State Line, Nevada and for a property management company in Las Vegas, Nevada. Three brothers, Lon D. Spencer, Jr., James Spencer, and Gene Cal Collins proceeded him in death. He leaves to celebrate his life, two daughters, Stephanie Spencer and Monica (Gerald) Jefferson, five grandchildren, Crystal Millner, Chelsey Bunch, Quincy Bunch, Ethan Jefferson and Evan Jefferson.  One sister, Winifred Spencer and one brother, Charles Spencer and a host of relatives and friends.
