Bryan Troy Childress passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 27, 2025, at Mountain View Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada, surrounded by his devoted wife, Brenda, and his family. Bryan was born on March 4, 1963, in South Bend, Indiana, and was the seventh child of Evelyn Eunice and John Wesley Childress, Sr. He was raised alongside six siblings, each sharing a special and enduring bond with him. Bryan was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Brenda Stamper, on August 19, 2006.
Bryan attended LaSalle High School in South Bend, Indiana, and graduated from Inglewood High School after relocating to Los Angeles, California to pursue his passion for basketball under the guidance of his elder brother, Ronald. Following high school, Bryan attended Ball State University.
Bryan was baptized by the late Reverend Dave S. Davis, at Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, South Bend, Indiana, where he was a faithful member until he relocated to Chicago, Illinois, and united with Salem Baptist Church of Chicago, under the leadership of Reverend James T. Meeks. During his time at Salem, Bryan served as an usher.
Bryan answered the call to duty and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1985, where he served as a Security Police Specialist. During his military career, Bryan served both domestically and overseas, including in Operation Desert Shield/Storm. Bryan’s exemplary service earned him numerous military honors, including the Air Force Longevity Ribbon, Air Force Overseas Short Tour Ribbon, Outstanding Unit Award, a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, and a Good Conduct Medal. Bryan’s time in the Air Force reflects his steadfast patriotism, discipline, and commitment to protecting others. Bryan was Honorably Discharged in 1993.
Following his Honorable Discharge, Bryan returned to civilian life with a deep-rooted dedication to public service. In 2003, Bryan proudly began a distinguished 20-year career as a Police Officer with the Chicago Police Department, serving honorably until his retirement in 2023. During his tenure with the Department, Bryan had the pleasure of partnering with David Eaglin and Sgt. Alma Price, whom he considered close friends. Bryan was a valued member of the Saturation Special Unit Team and received several commendations and awards from the City of Chicago in recognition of his bravery, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to community safety. His law enforcement career stood as a powerful continuation of his lifelong calling to serve and protect.
After retiring from the Chicago Police Department in 2023, Bryan and Brenda relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada, where they embraced a new chapter of life, enjoying their time together, as well as with family, friends, and their German Shepherd “son,” Chase. Bryan remained a diehard Chicago Bulls fan.
