Charles Roger Phillips, age 79, passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at home, after a long battle with kidney cancer. Roger is survived by his wife, Beverly; his daughter, Jayme; his son-in-law, Troy; granddaughters, Genevieve and Alexandra; and step-grandchildren, Hunter, Troy, Leila and Bailey.
Roger was born in Boise, Idaho on March 5, 1943 to Charles W. and Pauline Phillips. Roger lived in more places and attended more schools than he could keep track of, from California to Colorado to Cuba, Florida, and Arizona, the last school probably gave him a diploma just to get rid of him!
After graduating from high school, Roger was drafted into the Army in March of 1965. On active duty, he boarded a plane which landed in Vietnam, they started calling out names alphabetically for men to get off of the plane. Last names A-O stayed to serve in Vietnam and names P-Z flew on to Thailand. Roger spent the next couple of years working in a rock quarry running a rock crusher. The crushed rock was used to build roads needed by the Army. He was honorably discharged in 1967.
Roger moved to Las Vegas where his parents were living. Here’s where the stories really get interesting, good times, good company, beer and speeding tickets. He hired out at the Nevada Test Site in 1968 where he worked until retirement. He met Beverly in 1973 and they were married in 1974. Roger had purchased a plot of land way out of town and had a crazy idea to build a house. Beverly was up for the challenge! In 1976 the garage was completed with kitchen cabinets and a small bathroom - they moved in! They were really comfortable in their small space until Jayme surprised them! The family was growing, and it was time to build the house. They made that piece of property into a home that continues to be a blessing for our family.
Roger had a tool and a story for every occasion. He enjoyed having many projects and working around the house. He loved wood working and shared his creations with friends and family. Everyone who knew him loved him. He had a kind heart and always a smile. He was the rock of our family and will be sorely missed.
Graveside service will be held November 4, 2022, 2:00pm at the Bunker Memory Garden Memorial Park, 7251 West Lone Mountain Road, Las Vegas, NV 89129.
