Obituary

Colin Mark Hodgen, Ph.D., died after a long illness from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. He will be remembered as a cryptologist, scholar/educator, and soldier.

Mark lived in Hubbardston, Templeton, and Gardner, MA before beginning his life’s journey. He attended Hubbardston Center School, Templeton Center School, Narragansett Regional High School, Marietta College (BA, Political Science), Georgetown University (MA, Government, National Security Studies), and the University of Nevada, Reno (MA, PhD, Counseling & Educational Psychology).

He served in the U.S. Army Security Agency and Military Intelligence Corps from 1972 to 2000, retiring as a Sergeant Major, earning numerous awards and decorations. He served across the United States, Central America, Europe, Northern Africa, South Asia, and the Far East. Prior to his retirement, he served as the Senior Enlisted Advisor to two Directors of the National Security Agency, as a Certified Signals Collection Officer, and Adjunct Faculty member of the National Cryptologic School. He received the Knowlton Award.

Following his military retirement, Dr. Hodgen was in private practice as a counselor and counselor educator at RENEGADE Counseling in Reno, NV. He was a co-author of the Gambling Patient Placement Criteria (GPPC, 2010) and a field reviewer of The ASAM Criteria (ASAM, 2013), before retiring once again in 2018.

He was a member of MENSA, INTERTEL, ISPE, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychological Association, the Military Intelligence Corps Association, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Sierra Club, Delta Upsilon fraternity, Chi Sigma Iota, and the Phoenix Society,

Mark was the fourth son of Joseph William and Edna Mae (Taylor) Hodgen; the grandson of Robert and Anne (Welsh) Hodgen, and Henry and Amelia (Bezanson) Taylor; the brother of Peter Alden, John Taylor, and Joseph Caulfield Hodgen; and the uncle of Giselle Marie, Shelby Lynn, Janice Marie, and Christie Anne.

Sergeant Major Hodgen will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery with honors.
