May 23, 1929 - January 28, 2018

Dean L. Abney, 88, passed away quietly at Nevada Memory Care on Sunday, January 28, 2018. He was born in Mapleton, Iowa and was the youngest of 10 children. In his earlier years, he was a professional boxer and had the opportunity to box at Madison Square Garden. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp in the Korean War as a Sgt. 1st Marine, 1st Marine Division, Mortar Company 4.2, being honorably discharged in 1952. He worked as a masonry contractor for more than 50 years owning his own business. He was a retired fire engineer with the Clark County Fire Department with 20 years of service. In his retirement years, he worked for Meadows School as a bus driver. He was a hard-working, dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Dean is survived by his wife, Roberta LuAnn Abney; sister, Verla “Clutch” Parker; nine children, Steve, Bruce, Doug, Jeffrey, Jay, Dealene, Jaclyn, Dotti, and Janea; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Ray and Mary Abney; brothers, Vernon and Victor; sisters, Vivian, Verneice, Verdell, Valana, Valera, and Vera; and two great-grandchildren.

The family is planning a memorial and celebration of life on February 10, 2018. An open house will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at 1708 Ashburn Dr., North Las Vegas.
