E. Lloyd Ewell

Elmer Lloyd Ewell, 80, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away Saturday June 26, 2021, at University Medical Center, with his wife Carol at his side, after a short illness.

He was born in Provo, Utah, July 17, 1940, the first born of James Elmer Ewell and Dora Luella Pierce Ewell.

His family moved to the Las Vegas valley in his youth where he graduated from Rancho High School. He attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he was able to play for UNLV’s first basketball team.  He, along with the entire 1958-1959 team, was inducted September 22, 1989 into the University’s Basketball Hall of Fame. An accomplishment he wore as a badge of honor.  He then served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Great Lakes mission from 1960-1962. He had the opportunity to bring others unto Christ during his time serving as a missionary. In 1963 he married the love of his life Carol Ray Reid in the St. George Temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They settled in the Las Vegas valley, where he worked as a fire fighter for the Clark Co. Fire Department until his retirement from the Fire Department.  Afterwards moving on to work in the construction field as a journeyman plasterer.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, working in a variety of church callings, and spent many years working with his sons and area youth in the Boy Scouts of America. He was a devoted fan and follower of the UNLV Running Rebels and Los Angeles Lakers basketball teams.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father, as well as his beloved brother Larry G. Ewell.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Carol Ray Reid Ewell of Las Vegas, and 7 children.

Stephen (Melanie) Ewell of Henderson, David (Heidi) Ewell of Las Vegas, Brian (Jennifer) Ewell of Boulder City, Barry (Amy) Ewell of Henderson, Devin Ewell of Charlotte, NC, Jerry (Sarah) Ewell of Newberg, OR, Bonnie Bailey of Nashville, TN, his sister Rose Marie Ewell Lee of North Las Vegas.  As well as 31 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to express our sincere thanks to the Medical and Nursing staff at University Medical Center for the compassionate care he received. Also, to Dr Prabhu, Dr. Ahsan, and Dr. Kassahun for their tireless care and friendship over the years.

Services will be held, Friday July 2, 2021 at The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, at 5800 Carl Ave, Las Vegas NV. 89108.  Viewing from 10:00am- 10:45am with the funeral services to begin at 11am.  Graveside services to follow at Bunkers Memory Gardens 7251 W. Lone Mountain Rd. Las Vegas 89129
