Our valiant and loving father, Ferren Wittwer Bunker, age 96, passed peacefully away to his heavenly home on Sept. 29, 2014 in his home in Las Vegas, NV of natural causes while enduring to the end. He was born June 16, 1918 to Hector and Willimina Wittwer Bunker in Bunkerville, NV. He married Violet Terry in the St. George LDS Temple and had five children: Janet (David) Williams, Dianne (Kenneth) Fisher, Norma (Albert) Haines, Terry (Sandi) Bunker, and Brent (Pamela) Bunker. At the time of his passing, there were 25 grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren.
Ferren was a life-long Nevadan, never living anywhere else. He was the fifth of eight children and was loved by all of his siblings. He was helpful on the farm and ranch in his youth and took a special interest in anything agricultural. He received many awards and held high offices in the FFA on a state and national level. These early achievements would prepare him for his life’s occupation. He enjoyed music and excelled in scholastics being awarded Valedictorian of his class. He was an avid athlete lettering in basketball and track and enjoyed pitching on the high school baseball team. He won numerous awards in track and field. There were not many that could catch up to the speed of Ferren, and he continued his athletics at the collegiate level lettering in track and field throwing the javelin and excelling in the high jump. Of all of his successes he attributes to his loving Father in Heaven and gives Him all the glory.
He attended the University of Nevada Reno upon graduation from high school and graduated in 1940 in Vocational Agriculture. He was awarded by the University as the outstanding graduate in the College of Agriculture. He received his first teaching post in Alamo, NV and then in Lovelock, NV. His final occupation in the field of agriculture was as an agricultural extension agent for the University of Nevada in Lincoln and Clark Counties. He received a Professors Emeritus from UNR. He received Distinguished Service Award for National County Agents Association.
He met Violet Terry of Enterprise, UT and after a lengthy courtship they married in the St. George LDS Temple on June 16, 1942. They made their first home in Lovelock, NV and then began their family. He signed up for the draft in WWII but the draft board deferred him because of his mother’s critical illness and his ministerial duties in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a very patriotic individual and was concerned with serving his community and fellow men in many public ways and honors all who serve our country.
From an early age, he has served in many positions and had many responsibilities in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in the music, and as a teacher. He became a branch president, bishop, high councilor, patriarch and temple sealer during his lifetime. He served a full time LDS mission with his sweetheart in the California Arcadia Mission. He served as an ordinance worker with his wife in St. George and was the first sealer called to the Las Vegas Nevada Temple and continued this service until his death. His devotion to our Heavenly Father and his family were the most important considerations in his life. He was a devoted husband to his wife and father to his children, and a wonderful friend and counselor to all who knew him. His advice was sought after by many for agricultural and religious concerns. He is a published author of six books containing letters, poems, journal entries and genealogical pioneer ancestry. His posterity loves him greatly and is so grateful for the legacy he has left them.
Ferren was preceded in death and welcomed home lovingly by his grandparents, parents, Hector and Willimina Wittwer Bunker, and siblings: Ardyce Harding, Wanda Abbot, Reva Polly, Hector Merrill Bunker, Kent Bunker, and his loving eternal sweetheart, Violet.
A viewing will be held at Bunkers Mortuary at 925 Las Vegas Boulevard N. 89101, Sunday, October 5th from 6 to 8p.m. There will also be a viewing prior to the celebration of his life on Monday morning from 9 to 10a.m. October 6th, at the Alta and Jones church building on 6120 W.
