Gary S. Pitts

June 21, 1949 — July 6, 2013

Gary S. Pitts, 64, of Las Vegas, beloved husband of Glenna Pitts, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2013, with his family at his side. He was born in Reno, June 21 1949, to Clifford and Marjorie Pitts. The family moved to Henderson in 1951. Gary graduated from Basic High School and went on to the University of Oregon, earning a bachelor's degree in psychology. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Vietnam War. Once out of the service, he settled back in Eugene where he got his masters degree in psychology while working for the Oregon State Welfare Department in social services. In 1982, Gary relocated with his wife, Glenna, back to Las Vegas, and followed in his father's footsteps, joining the apprenticeship program for the IBEW electricians union. He became a journeyman electrician in 1987. The last 13 years of his electrician career Gary was a business agent for the IBEW Local 357. He started and coordinated the IBEW Local 357 Annual Charity Golf Tournament in 2001. Through his efforts and hard work, this golf tournament continues today. His involvement with the union remained an important part of his life following his retirement in July 2011. Gary was a die-hard Oregon Ducks fan. He loved traveling and in particular seemed very at peace on the water. His infectious smile and laugh followed him everywhere. He was a lifelong golfer, lover of movies and was an avid reader. Later in life he picked up pottery, where he excelled at throwing pots and making loved ones specific pieces. He took extreme pride in his family. He was very close to his parents and his sister and loved his children and grandchildren tremendously. His overall calming presence and peacefulness comforted family and friends alike throughout his life. Gary is survived by his wife, of 31 years, Glenna; father, Cliff; sister, Teri; life-long friend, MarryAnn; cousin, Jim Savage and his wife, Donna; son Josh; daughters, Jennifer, Kacey and Carrie; and grandchildren, Kelton Kaden and Alexis. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. N. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the IBEW Local 357 Welfare Fund on his behalf.
