Harriett Thornton Hicks, who celebrated her 100th birthday last June, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014, in Las Vegas. She left a legacy of family togetherness and devotion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was born June 8, 1913, to William U. and Adalina O. Thornton, in Parowan, Utah. The 13th of 14 children, she was the final survivor of the first generation. She moved to Las Vegas in 1931 and married Charles Hicks in 1934. They celebrated their 50th anniversary before he died in 1987. She cherished her independence and lived by herself in the house they had built in 1942. She worked in the St. George and Las Vegas temples. She had been a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers for over 60 years. The Thornton Family Foundation was created by Harriett and several siblings. Its 50th annual family reunion was held last year. Harriett was secretary/treasurer and the prime reunion organizer. She is survived by her daughter, Gloria (Earl) Alger; and son, Richard (Christine) Hicks, both of Las Vegas; 12 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 21, at Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. N. There will be a second visitation at 9-10 a.m. Saturday, March 22, with funeral services following, both at the LDS Chapel, 1101 N. Pecos Road. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 7251 W. Lone Mountain Road.
