James Mercer

MSGT. JAMES MERCER U.S. ARMY, Retired James Arthur Mercer, 65, of Las Vegas, passed away April 11, 2011. He was born Nov. 30, 1945, in Norfolk, Va. He moved to Las Vegas in 1984. James was employed by Metropolitian Police Department as a corrections officer for 2 years then in 1987 became a Nevada State Trooper, where he retired in 2004. He married Oct. 9, 1987, to Maureen Mercer. He served in Vietnam as battalion commanders radio telephone operator. Later served as platoon sargent in 223rd MP Company Louisville, Ky. He joined the 72nd MP Company Nevada National Guard in 1985. He deployed to Operation Desert Shield/Storm Company 1SGT. He transferred to US Army Reserve in 1992, where he served as honor guard at Arlington National Cemetery. He retired in 2005 with over 34 years of military service. James served as a 32nd Degree Mason, Shriner of Masonic Daylight Lodge 44 and honorary lifetime member VFW Post 10047. He served as a volunteer for Nevada Paralyzed Veterans of America as well as being a motorcycle enthusiast with a local club. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Floyd Mercer; mother, Janice Mercer; guardian, Ed Woost; niece, Lisa Powell; and nephew, David Powell. James is survived by his wife, Maureen Mercer; sons, Troy D. and wife, Adriane Mercer, and James Lyle Mercer; brothers, Tom Powell and wife, Carolyn, Gerald Powell and wife, Toni, and Albert Mercer and wife, Margaret of Las Vegas; and brother, Wayne Powell and wife, Charlene of Mississippi; one grandson, Derek James Mercer of North Carolina; five nephews; five nieces; and cousin, Caroline Mercer of Las Vegas. Viewing will be 1-3 p.m. Saturday, April 23, with services to follow, both at Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd., North. Reception following service at Eagles Lodge on Washington and Bruce.
