Senior Master Sergeant Jean M. Colby USAF-ret. Age 91, passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2012. She was born on September 14, 1921 in Minneapolis, MN. The daughter of Simon and Elsie Colby. Jean was a member of many Service Auxiliary Groups in the Las Vegas area.
Jean enlisted in the WACS (Woman Army Corps) before it became the Air Force. When she enlisted in the WACS she was one of the first to do so, she enlisted in Des Moines, Iowa in 1943. In her 31 years of service the WACS became a part of the Air Force. She particularly enjoyed being a First Sergeant where she would listen and council the younger women in her command. She would periodically hear from them right up to the time of her death. That meant a lot to her to help ladies from the part commands where she served. She also loved her 6 nephews from her two brothers, she always remembered them at Christmas and their birthdays, as well as all the nieces, great nephews and nieces as well as the great-great nephews and nieces.
Jean was never married while her true love was the Air Force, a friend names Lou and growing and tending her roses.
Preceding her in death was Lou, as well as her brother John Colby Jr., Nephew Edward F. Knock along with her parents.
Surviving her is her brother and his wife, Stephen and Ruth Colby, Johns surviving wife Katherine Colby. Also numerous nieces, great nieces, great-great nieces, along with nephews, great nephews, great-great nephews. She was loved very much and will be missed greatly.
A special thanks to Theodore and Celia Williams for tending to her daily. Also Carolyn Whatley who attended military events with Jean. Also nephew Tom Colby who often visited from Los Angeles.
A viewing will be held from 9-11 AM on Saturday, December 22, 2012 with a Funeral Service with Full Military Honors to begin at 11:00 AM both will be held at Bunkers Mortuary Chapel 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North, Las Vegas, NV
