John McNeil, 75, of Las Vegas, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, as the result of a hemorrhagic stroke at St. Rose-Sienna in Henderson. He was 75 years old. John suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage Monday afternoon, one of the most debilitating and deadly types of strokes one can suffer. John was a dedicated American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) employee of 40 years. He was born in Bangor, Maine, and had lived in Las Vegas for the past 19 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Marian. John is survived by his siblings, Joseph, William and Mary; and his partner of 41 years, Paul Giguere. John served four years in the Air Force as a communications specialist prior to joining the AHA/ASA. John leaves a legacy as an outstanding community leader, loving friend, and ardent stroke advocate. John received awards to numerous to mention for his work with hospitals, volunteers and stroke victors and their families as he devoted himself to improving stroke treatment and the quality of life for stroke survivors in Las Vegas. His passion for promoting stroke prevention and educating the public about stroke warning signs was rooted in his personal experience with his brother's stroke. He was very close to his brother, and spent a great deal of time as his caretaker. John will be missed by many because of his selflessness and commitment to always helping others. John was an avid Boston area sports fan and excited to cheer the Red Sox, Patriots Celtics and Bruins. He was also very involved with his church, Christ the King Catholic Community. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 12, at Christ the King Catholic Community, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive.
