Joseph James Benneman, 84, born in Philadelphia, a resident of Las Vegas since 1958, passed away July 8, 2012. Joseph, a retired television technician and proprietor of Joseph's TV, was preceded in death by two of his six children, Joseph Jr. and Sally; and his sister, Claire. He is survived by his wife, of 54 years, Dolores and their four children, Bud, Marion, Joanne, and Michael; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; son-in-law, Bob; daughter-in-law, Kelly; two brothers, Charles and Vincent; and sister, Marion. Joseph served in World War II in the U.S. Navy during 1945 to 1947 on the USS Dixie. After an honorable discharge, he served in the U.S. Navy Reserves as a Seabees. Joseph was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and served as both post and district commander. He also ran the VFW Voice of Democracy scholarship competition. As an active community member, Joseph established several community school boards including Baker Park and Johnson Community schools. Most notable, he founded the Safekey after school program for primary school children throughout the Las Vegas Valley. Joseph will always be remembered for his devotion to children and family and for his wit and sense of humor. Services will be at 9:30 a.m., Monday July 23, at Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church, followed by an honor guard service at 12:30 p.m. at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Buchanan Blvd., Boulder City.
