Marianne Stewart Carpenter, born November 19th, 1929, passed away on February 8th, 2022, of natural causes, she was 92 years old. Known by those that loved her as “Mimi.” She was the great granddaughter of Helen J. Stewart, a pioneer Las Vegan, recognized in books as being the first lady of Las Vegas. Marianne was a world traveler who visited the Great Pyramids of Egypt and walked the streets of Hong Kong.
Marianne attended and graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1947. Her first employment was as Secretary to the Base Commander of Nellis AFB General McGhee in 1962. In 1986 she was a semi-finalist for the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce Women’s Council, Women’s Achievement Award. She continued her federal employment with the U.S. Public Health Service. Out of a staff of one hundred men, she was one of the first female Security Representatives designated by U.S.P.H.S. In 1970, the U.S.P.H.S. merged into the newly founded Environmental Protection Agency, EPA. Marianne continued her work with the department, and on behalf of EPA she collaborated with UNLV to implement a recycling program on the campus. For these efforts she received the Aldo Leopold Award for Sustainability. With her success she went onto proposing UNLV sponsor an event that would be called, “Earth Day.” Marianne was Chairperson and would assist in coordinating the activities for school children and the public to attend for the next 20 years. She received a letter of commendation from President G.W. Bush for these efforts. Marianne worked for the federal government for 37 years. She also owned and operated a security firm Merit Protection Services which included an accredited polygraph school. In 1984 she edited and published, “Who are the Women of Las Vegas” that is also held in the Library of Congress. She also wrote and published the book, “History of Earth Day” edited by Aleana Marin. Marianne’s retirement years were spent happily with her nephew Robert “Keith” Stewart and his significant other Aleana Marin, they managed her apartments, and were her caregivers.
Marianne is survived by her brother Robert W. Stewart, nephews Robert “Keith” Stewart, Ken, Ron, Zokie, Christian, & Jason, nieces Candyce, Sharon, Devon, Becky, Bridget & Vicki, sisters-in-law Bobbye and Ronatta. She will be interred at Bunkers Brothers Eden Vale. No services will be held.
