Melvina LaVonne Hertig returned to her heavenly home June 20, 2017. She was born May 26, 1926, to Melvina U. Dust and Robert G. Dust, in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she spent the majority of her early life. She graduated from Granite High School in 1944. A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), she served a mission in the North Central States from 1951 to 1953. She married Ernest Hertig, in the Salt Lake City Temple Sept. 21, 1956. Marriage blessed her with his three children, Michalene Roll, Michael (Jill) and Edward (Debby) and, together, had three more children, John (Janice), Nancy Rodriguez (Carlos) and Kathryn. Shortly after they were married, Ernie and LaVonne moved to Las Vegas with their four youngest children. From 1964- 1966, they served as LDS building missionaries in Kassel, Germany, overseeing the construction of a chapel. LaVonne served in various church callings throughout her life and enjoyed them all. Although she loved being a homemaker, when her children were older, she returned to work at Leavitt Insurance Agency for many years. After retiring, she spent several years serving in the Las Vegas Temple. LaVonne had a sharp mind, a thirst for knowledge and loved to read. She spent countless hours nurturing her thriving garden in the Las Vegas dirt. She loved rose gardens, cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting, crossword puzzles, game shows and chocolate. Most of all, she enjoyed being with family. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Robert Dust; and daughter-in-law, Jill Hertig. Survived by sisters, Jeanne Vogler, Judy Orullian and Marilyn Sheldon; her six children; 15 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
