Michael Nicholas Juarez

November 21, 1941 — June 3, 2023

Michael (Coach) Juarez, a beloved Las Vegas High School teacher and longtime resident passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at the age of 81.

He was born in the Flagstaff area of Arizona on November 21, 1941 to Ruth and Nicholas Juarez. He is preceded in death by his parents; Brothers, Anthony and Vincent Juarez, Sister; Anita Basher.

Growing up in Arizona allowed him to pursue his love of history and his own Native American culture. He graduated from Arizona State College now known NAU, where he was a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity. He soon started a teaching career that would span over 40 years- teaching mostly social studies and government at Valley High School. While at Valley he enjoyed the title “Coach Juarez” as he led the wrestling team to a string of State Championships.

Known for his lush backyard, Michael had created an oasis in the desert where he could often be found tending to his lavish mini vineyard or just resting under one of his many fruit trees. He truly had a green thumb.

Cooking was his passion and he delighted friends and family with his many Mexican dishes. He loved sharing recipes with his daughters and was beginning to pass on traditions to the grandchildren. The Juarez house was always the gathering place to find plenty of love and laughter-and a huge pot of red or green chile!

Upon retirement in 2007, Michael’s love of gemstones pearls, and other pretty things led him to try his hand at jewelry making as a hobby, which made his daughters very happy. He soon became known to the grandkids as “PAPA PRETTY”.

Michael is survived by Sherry, his wife of 30 years who was always by his side. Together they created a home where everyone was welcome and where all who entered felt like family. In addition to his 11 grandchildren, he is also survived by 4 daughters, Micah(Rueben) Wright, Briana(Jason) Wagner, Cameron(Andrew) Iacona, and Sherry’s daughter Katherine(Ryan) Creelman, Brother Jaime Juarez, and three sisters, Niki Gillmore, Susan Juarez, Alicia Juarez.

This exceptional husband, father, grandfather, and educator will be remembered for his warm smile and quick wit; His open heart and open arms, but most of all he will be remembered for his unconditional love for his family. He will be dearly missed.

A Celebration of Michael’s life will be held at a later date.
