Rafaela Madrid

Rafaela Madrid, passed away on March 24, 2022 at the age of 89.  Rafaela was born in Guadalajara Mexico on October 24, 1932, to Amelia and Gilibaldo Sandoval.  Rafaela grew up in the township of La Experencia, Guadalajara, the third of twelve children.

As a young child herself, Rafaela assumed the role of care giver to her younger brothers and sisters.  This desire to help others guided her in her career choice as she graduated with a degree in nursing from the University of Guadalajara.

While working as a nurse in the summer of 1963, Rafaela was introduced to a young American from Wyoming, the handsome Alfonso Madrid.  The two got along so well, they married that fall.  Al and Rafaela remained united in marriage for over 58 years, until Rafaela’s passing in March of 2022.

Al married Rafaela and brought her to the United States, where she continued working as a nurse until she retired in 1992.  Upon her retirement she and her husband began a career of buying and selling items from yard sales.  It was time consuming, but something they enjoyed doing together.

Rafaela was an excellent cook, seamstress, and all around handy person.  If she set her mind to a task, it would be accomplished.  She was a gracious hostess who greeted you warmly and was quick to offer you food and drink.  Alfonso was blessed by God when he took that trip to Mexico in the summer of 1963.

Rafaela is survived by her daughters Brenda (Mark), and Sandra (Ronald), four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her sisters Paz, Lupe, and Amelia and brothers Ramiro, Antonio, Gilberto and David.

A memorial service for Rafaela will be held on April 15th, 11:00 am at Growing in Grace Church of Las Vegas.  The church is located at 6920 Edna Ave. Las Vegas, NV 89117.
