Robert M. Evans, 79 years of age, passed from this life January 24, 2010 after incurring a lengthy illness. He was born in Mona, Utah Sept. 15, 1930. He is survived by Norma his loving wife and life partner of 61 years, his daughter Linda Lesley and son Charles Evans all residing in Las Vegas. He has three grandchildren, Michael Fischer, Byron and Sheena Evans. His brother, Elmo Molyneaux and sister, Armona Matheson also of Las Vegas. He attended school in Ely, NV and worked at a young age at the mines on Spruce Mountain where he became known as the “Spruce Mountain Kid”. He was a resident of Nevada since the early 1940’s. At the young age of 17 years he joined the Navy to serve his country and see the world. He cherished his tour abroad the Destroyer USS Miles C. Fox and kept in contact with a few Navy Buddies till the end. He married the love of his life, Norma, during shore leave on Dec. 27, 1948. After returning from the Navy to Las Vegas he worked at a sawmill on Mt. Charleston and assorted jobs until gaining employment at the lime mine north of Las Vegas at Apex, NV in 1950. He worked at Apex for 35 years until his retirement. During those years he held many positions including haul truck driver, shovel operator, maintenance, foreman and Assistant Plant Manager. He was a very dedicated, hard worker. He loved his job and formed many lifelong friendships with his co-workers. During his life and into his retirement Bob enjoyed many pastimes and hobbies with his family and cherished friends. He loved to travel and vacationed often to visit family and friends across the country. One of Bob’s favorite hobbies was to search out, collect and restore antiques of all sorts and old mining equipment. He was especially interested in old single cylinder engines and caterpillar crawlers. He enjoyed sharing his collections at many fairs and events around the southwest. His unending interest and fascinations with old caterpillar crawlers earned him the nickname “The Cat Man”. Throughout Bob’s life he showed a passion and respect for the outdoors. He was an avid sportsman and few things were enjoyed more than hunting and fishing with family and his closest friends. Many a trip started out hunting or fishing and spun off into exploring, rock hounding, ATV’s and in general searching out about everything and anything in the great outdoors.
Bob Evans enjoyed life and always cherished his times with his loving wife, children and grandchildren. His friends were priceless to him and made a concerted effort to be kind, truthful and enjoy life to it’s fullest.
Visitation will be Thursday 4-8pm at Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. N.. services will be Friday, 8am followed by interment at the So. Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City.
