Valeria Shaw

October 21, 1922 — April 23, 2023

Valeria M. Smith was born on October 21, 1922 in Boise, Idaho to Lee and Mary Smith. She lived in Boise through 2 years of college and met and married Richard Cannon on February 11, 1942. They were blessed with 3 children, Richard, Susan And Mary Ann Cannon. She along with her husband, first started bowling in the newly opened Henderson Bowl. They also bowled at the Showboat that began her legacy in bowling.

The two divorced in 1967, and in 1968 she met and married Herb Shaw. He had a daughter, Cindy and she became our sister.

They decided to move to Orcas Island in Puget Sound, Washington. They were there for about 3 years and Herb got sick so they moved back to Las Vegas. Their family was very happy with them coming back. Valeria worked in banking there with loan processing.

When they got back, she went to work at Weyerhaeuser Mortgage and retired in 1978. After retiring she worked at a friends gas station doing bookkeeping.

Val lost the love of her life, Herb , in July 1984. She never remarried as she claimed she was too old to train another one...

During Val's retirement she bowled 3 times a week, and was a positive influence on all bowlers around her. She was the secretary of many leagues. She worked with the Women's Bowling Association and she played a big role in the success of the men and women bowlers being merged. She was made director and worked on most committees. Val was very proactive for their tournaments. She put out flyers and was recruiting teams to bowl. She never hesitated to offer help to any committee or tournament. She worked the office regularly and services on the awards committee from the emergence of the new Association.

Her health unfortunately made her unable to continue her work in the Bowling Association and the young age of 96 in 2019. She officially retired from bowling when she was 99. Everyone who knows Val would agree that she deserved the honor of being inducted into the Southern Nevada USBC Hall of Fame in 2013. Everyone except Val herself.

She celebrated her 100th birthday with about 80 of her family and friends. The look on her face when she was gently reminded of who her guests were was priceless.

As her health continued to declined, she was able to be at home with her daughter and family around her. She took her last breath on April 23rd, 2023 at 3:10 am and has been reunited with her family and loved ones that have passed before her.

We couldn't have asked for a better more loyal mother, grandmother, great grandmother or great great grandmother and friend. Thank you Heavenly Father for allowing us to have her in our lives.

I leave this with you in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
