Mary A. (Dougas) Lymberopoulos fell asleep to the Lord on May 4, 2020 after complications from COVID-19. Mary was born on September 18, 1933, in Lynn, Massachusetts. She was the youngest of three children born to Athanasios and Irene (Angelakis) Dougas, who immigrated with their families from Greece prior to meeting in the United States and getting married.
In her younger years, Mary enjoyed working after school and on the weekends at her Father's restaurant, The Splendor. She was very athletic, enjoyed both snow and water skiing, and was known as "Dead-eye Dougas'' on her basketball team. Mary also was a cheerleader in high school and college. Remarkably, Mary graduated Valedictorian from both Lynn English High and Salem Teachers College.
She met the love of her life, Constantinos (Gus) Lymberopoulos, at an AHEPA (Greek Association) Convention in Chicago and was married four months later on November 25, 1962 at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Lynn, Massachusetts. They settled in Hollywood, California, where they attended St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, with Gus' large Lymberopoulos/Peterson family. Mary taught Elementary school until they started their family. Mary and Gus bought their first home in Van Nuys, California in 1964, and began attending St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, where they raised their three children: Irene, Kathryn, and Nicholas. Every Sunday, Mary made it a point to take the family to church.
Mary was blessed with the gift of playing the piano by ear, serenading her children each night as they fell asleep. She also learned how to play the guitar and attended monthly "hoots" sharing music and songs with fellow guitarists, which led to her becoming the song leader for numerous clubs, where she shined onstage sharing her love of music with others. She enjoyed camping at McGrath State Beach, traveling to Hawaii in the summers, and to the islands of Greece. She was an excellent tennis player, winning many singles and doubles tournaments. Mary passed on her love of tennis to her family with countless doubles games.
Mary and Gus retired in Sun City, Las Vegas in 1991 where Mary joined numerous clubs and founded the Sun City Folk Dancers, putting on over 300 shows in many different venues, including casinos and the St. John's Greek Orthodox Church Festival. She enjoyed growing flowers, maintaining close communication with her friends and family, and eating chocolate, or anything sweet. In Mary's final years at her assisted living home, she would play piano for the residents and glowed with a beautiful smile.
Mary was a wonderful, loving and supportive wife, mother, and Yiayia. She loved to play hours and hours and hours of card games and board games with her grandsons, hold piano concerts and held a famous (in the Lymberopoulos circle) "Yiayia's Summer Camp." She was often referred to as "Disneyland Yiayia" because she was so much fun.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband Gus of 38 years, her sister Georgia, and brother Tony. She is survived by her loving children and their spouses: Irene (George), Kathryn (Dionisios), and Nicholas (Vicki), and her six grandsons: Christian, Christopher, Constantine A., Constantine N., Harrison, and Nicholas.
The family would like to acknowledge Mary's Oakmont of Valencia Family and the Henry Mayo Hospital's team of doctors and nurses that supported Mary throughout her Covid-19 fight and near recovery, and who gave her love, comfort, and encouragement when the family could not be with her. They are our heroes and the family will be forever grateful for them.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date when we can all be together.
